‘OTTO – Odes to the Ocean’ is a captivating multi-media project combining music, film, and performance art, conceived by Catherine Shrubshall in early 2023. During a six-week retreat by the Essex coastline, Catherine wrote music inspired by stories of the sea and those whose lives are shaped by it. Collaborating with composer Richard Kett at Dave Studios, they crafted a 45-minute soundtrack that blends ethereal, cinematic, and dramatic soundscapes with influences from folk, world music, free improvisation, and classical music. The music features live instruments such as clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone, and harmonium, reflecting the haunting beauty of the ocean and its people.

OTTO has grown into an immersive collaboration involving filmmaker Sally Child, musician/performer Cydnei B and dancer/movement coach Georgie Ferraro. The project debuted at The Nose project space in Walton on the Naze, following on with an artist residency at We Are The Minories in Colchester and a new dance piece for the Between the Tides Festival in Essex. Featuring live performances, film screenings and community workshops, OTTO is an evolving tribute to the ocean’s mystery and the stories of its shore dwellers
